How Vertical and Horizontal Motion Are Critical in Lock Picking

Many people think lock picking involves a simple motion, but the process involves more than moving a tool around inside a lock. Although some may know that a pick and a tension tool work together in this process, they may not know how their separate and distinct movements work together to effectively pick a lock.

Vertical Movements Lift the Pins

When a person picks a lock, the pick moves vertically, up and down, to lift the pins inside the lock. In a standard pin tumbler lock, stacks of pins sit in a row, and their varying heights block the core of the lock, the plug, from turning. The person lifts each pin stack with a lock pick so that the space between the pins in each pin stack meets the space between the lock’s plug and its housing, known as the “shear line”, allowing the lock to turn.

This movement gives single pin picking its main action. Instead of sweeping across the row of pins simultaneously, the user places the lock pick under one pin and lifts with intention and control. That vertical motion is fundamental in picking a lock.

Horizontal Movements Control Tension

Equally important as the pick vertically lifting the pins inside the lock is the horizontal pressure of the tension tool applying torque to the lock’s plug. This tension is key, as it holds the pins in place as the lock is picked. Without it, the lifted pins would just fall back down as soon as the lock pick is removed.

These combined movements give the picking process its control. The pick may handle the lifting, but the tension tool helps the user feel when the lock starts to respond. Too much turning force can make lifting the pins difficult, effectively binding the pins, while too little will not correctly set the pins and can make the lock feel hard to read.

Raking Uses Side-to-Side Movement

Some lock picking methods focus on moving the pick across the entire row of pins instead of lifting one at a time. This technique, called raking, can feel more like brushing through the inside of the lock while the tension tool applies light turning pressure. As the rake moves in and out, it contacts multiple pins and encourages them to rise, drop, and settle while the tension tool applies horizontal pressure to hold the pins in place once they reach the shear line.

This method uses both directions of movement. The pick travels horizontally through the pin area, but it also needs upward contact to move the pins. That combination can help beginners understand why raking feels different from placing a hook under one pin and lifting with care.

Why the Two Axes Matter Together

Ultimately, it is important for professionals and lock sport hobbyists to be aware that vertical and horizontal motion are critical in lock picking. A lock does not respond to vertical or horizontal movement alone. Vertical lifting moves the pins toward the position that frees the plug. Horizontal tension tests whether those pins have reached the right point and holds them in place.
